Where do villages spawn?

Villages spawn on the surface of the Overworld in a small set of biomes. The biome decides the village style, so a desert village looks different from a taiga village. Our map shows predicted village positions from world generation; terrain can still stop one from generating.

Good to know	Each village biome has its own building style. In Java Edition there is roughly a 1 in 2 chance of at least one village within 500 blocks of world spawn. Villages can also generate in superflat worlds. The number of beds sets how many villagers the village can hold.

What our engine measured

We ran our engine on 1,000 random seeds (Java 26.3) and measured how far the nearest villages is from world spawn, searching up to 3,000 blocks away.

Median distance from spawn: 501 blocks

How to find villages without a seed map

Climb a hill or pillar up and look for paths, farms and roofs across flat biomes.
Search plains, savanna, desert, taiga, meadow and snowy plains first; villages do not spawn in other Java biomes.
Follow dirt paths: they connect the houses and lead to the village center with the bell.
Use the village finder with your seed so you only travel to real village positions.

What you find inside

What	Details
Villagers	Trade emeralds for tools, food, books and maps.
Iron golem	Guards the village and attacks hostile mobs.
Chests	Loot chests in some houses; contents depend on the building.
Job site blocks	Furnaces, looms, cartography tables and more give villagers their jobs.
Bell and beds	The bell marks the meeting point; beds set the villager count.
Animals and cats	Livestock and cats often spawn in and around the village.

Java vs Bedrock

Bedrock Edition can generate villages in a few extra biomes, such as snowy taiga and sunflower plains, and in Bedrock the chance of a village near spawn is higher. Structure positions differ between Java and Bedrock for the same seed; this finder uses Java generation.

What is the command to find a village?

In Java, /locate structure minecraft:village_plains finds the nearest plains village. Use our finder to see villages around you before you start playing.

Which biomes do villages spawn in?

Why is there no village where the finder shows one?

Positions are predictions from world generation, and terrain can stop a village from generating. Check that your seed and version match, then confirm with /locate.

Does the village finder work for Bedrock?

Not yet. Bedrock village positions differ from Java for the same seed, so our Bedrock mode shows biomes only.

Does it support Java 26.3?
