Diamonds can appear anywhere from Y 16 down to Y -63, but they get more frequent the deeper you go, so strip mining near the bottom of the world gives you the best odds.

What is the best Y level for diamonds in 2026?

On current Java Edition, aim for Y -58 or Y -59. The wiki names those two levels as where deepslate diamond ore is most commonly found.

The ore's spread technically peaks at Y -64, but the wiki gives Y -58 and Y -59 as the levels where you actually find deepslate diamond ore most often. Mining a few blocks above the lowest ore level keeps you right in the richest band.

How does diamond ore generate?

Diamond ore generates in four separate batches in each chunk. Three of them can place ore anywhere from Y 16 down to Y -63, and a fourth, "buried" batch only places ore from Y -4 down to Y -63. Together they form a triangle-shaped spread: almost nothing near Y 16, then more and more ore the deeper you dig, with the peak at the bottom.

That fourth batch is one reason deep levels are so much better than levels just below Y 0.

Why do caves have fewer diamonds?

Diamond ore does not like air. Most diamond batches have a chance to skip an ore block if it would sit next to air, and one batch never places ore next to air at all. So cave walls show you fewer diamonds than the same amount of solid rock would hold.

That changes how you should mine:

• Caving is fast and fun, but you only see the ore that survived the air check.
• Strip or branch mining through solid deepslate finds the ore that caves hide.

The best plan is often both: explore caves for quick finds, then strip mine at Y -58 once the caves run out. The wiki also notes that diamond ore is not less likely to generate near water or lava, so lava pools at depth are not a sign that an area is empty.

Is the best Y level different on Bedrock?

The wiki states that Bedrock Edition's diamond generation was tweaked to be in parity with Java Edition. So Y -58 to Y -59 is also the level to aim for on Bedrock.

How do I mine diamonds efficiently?

A simple, safe routine for strip mining:

1. Get the right tool. You need an iron pickaxe or better. Anything weaker will not give you the diamond.
2. Dig down with a staircase, not a straight shaft, so you do not drop into a cave or lava.
3. Stop at Y -58 or Y -59. Make a small base with a chest, a crafting table and a furnace.
4. Dig long 1×2 tunnels in one direction. Leave a gap of a couple of blocks between parallel tunnels so you see new rock on each side.
5. Carry water and blocks in case you break into lava.
6. Mine ore with Fortune if you have it (see below).

How much does Fortune help with diamonds?

A lot. Without Fortune, each diamond ore drops one diamond and 3 to 7 experience. With Fortune, the wiki gives these averages:

A good habit: mine the stone around a vein with any pickaxe, then switch to your Fortune pickaxe only for the diamond ore.
