Where do pillager outposts spawn?

Pillager outposts are dark oak watchtowers in the Overworld, guarded by pillagers. They are rarer than villages but less rare than woodland mansions, usually several hundred to a couple of thousand blocks apart. In Java they never generate too close to, or inside, a village.

Look for a tall tower of dark oak and birch planks with ominous banners on it.
Search the same open biomes where villages spawn, plus mountain biomes like groves and peaks.
Watch for pillagers with crossbows; they keep spawning near the tower.

Java vs Bedrock

In Bedrock Edition, outposts can generate near or even inside villages, and their foundations extend down with cobblestone and dark oak planks. In Java, an outpost over water or air gets a round terrain platform instead. Structure positions differ between Java and Bedrock for the same seed; this finder uses Java generation.
