Nether Portal Calculator
Type your Overworld X, Y and Z to get the matching Nether coordinates — X and Z are divided by 8, Y stays the same. Switch direction to go from the Nether back to the Overworld (× 8). Build your second portal at the result so the two portals link.
Nether X and Z = Overworld X and Z ÷ 8. Y stays the same. (Nether → Overworld: × 8.) Y is not divided. Keep the portal inside the Nether's build limits (above the bedrock floor and below the ceiling).
How to link two portals
Note your coordinates
Stand where your Overworld portal is (or will be) and read X, Y, Z from the debug screen (F3 on Java) or the coordinates setting on Bedrock.
Convert
Enter them above. The calculator divides X and Z by 8 and keeps Y.
Build in the Nether
Go to the Nether, travel to the result and build the second portal there — as close to those exact coordinates as you can.
Test
Walk through both ways. If you arrive at a different portal, see the linking rules below.
How does portal linking work?
When you enter a portal, the game converts your position to the other dimension and looks for an existing portal near that point.
| Edition | Search area in the Overworld | Search area in the Nether |
|---|---|---|
| Java | 256 × 256 blocks (128-block radius) | 32 × 32 blocks (16-block radius) |
| Bedrock | 256 × 256 blocks (128-block radius) | 256 × 256 blocks (128-block radius) |
The game picks the closest portal in that area. If there is none, it builds a new portal nearby — so a portal built slightly off can create an unwanted third portal. Build at the calculated coordinates to avoid that.
Why does the Y level not change?
Only the horizontal distance is scaled. One block walked in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld on the X and Z axes, but height is the same in both dimensions. That is why Nether travel is fast — and why portals stacked above each other in the Nether can still link to the wrong Overworld portal. More in our guide how nether portals link.
Find Nether structures
Once you are in the Nether, use the nether fortress finder and the bastion finder with your seed, or switch the seed map to the Nether.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Nether portal ratio?
1:8 on the X and Z axes. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether coordinates; multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go back. Y is not changed.
Why did my portal take me to the wrong portal?
The game links to the closest existing portal inside its search area. In Java, that area is a 128-block radius in the Overworld but only 16 blocks in the Nether, so nearby portals can steal the link. Build each portal at the calculated coordinates.
Does this calculator work for Bedrock?
Yes. The 1:8 conversion is the same. Bedrock searches a 128-block radius in both dimensions, so linking is a little more forgiving in the Nether.
Do negative coordinates work?
Yes. Enter the minus sign; the calculator rounds down, as the game does when converting to the Nether.
